Current projects and news

December 8/09 - Winter has arrived and it's been brutally cold here in Victoria with temperatures tanking to a whopping -7C! It's so cold that I have to defrost my hummingbird feeders each morning. ;)

We've had some kick-ass storms and feel like hibernating, so the boat has been decommissioned while we do some maintenance. One of the blower fans in the Espar system has died (for the 2nd time), and there are a couple leaky gauges on the new engine that need to be addressed. We're also considering wiring the boat and installing power recepticles so that when we're at the dock, we don't have extension cords all over the place.

old news

Boat owners are masochists

Improvements and repairs made since purchase - 2009

installed removable Blue Performance cockpit bags and winch handle pockets to
better store crap in the cockpit

purchased a portable Dometic CF110-AC refrigerator

upgraded the stereo to one that supports an iPod

replaced the 2 6-volt house batteries with 2 U2200 Interstate Workaholic golf cart batteries in anticipation of a greater draw from the fridge

replaced our dead dinghy engine with a new Suzuki 4-stroke 2.5HP engine - we can't plane but it tows better and you don't get a hernia lifting it in and out of the dinghy!

Improvements and repairs made since purchase - 2008

said 'screw you old engine, we're tired of you causing us headaches' and repowered the boat with a Yanmar 3YM30, including an upgraded 80 Amp alternator and a Racor Turbine Series Model 900MA Water Separating diesel fuel filter

added some serious Thinsulate acoustic soundproofing in the engine compartment and protected it by enclosing it in perforated aluminum sheeting

replaced the raw water strainer

replaced the bilge pump hoses

fixed a leak in the fuel sending unit on the fuel tank

serviced the engine injectors...which disclosed other problems and led to the replacement of the engine (noted above)

re-pitched the prop - this will stop the overloading of the engine and allow us to run at max RPM...which had to be done again when the new engine was installed

ground and re-epoxied the cracked area surrounding the prop strut (probably due to vibration caused by the pitch of the prop), replaced the shaft and cutlass bearing, and re-packed the stuffing box - the boat needed to be out of the water to re-pitch the prop, so what the hell...why not spend a few more thousand dollars!

replaced worn-out cockpit speakers with ones that are actually waterproof...again, another great concept on the folly

replaced head hoses

installed custom-fabricated stainless steel aft closed chocks

Walker Bay RHIB replaced by the mfgr because of chronic leaks in the original RHIB

tightened packing gland - no more wet bilge! (what a concept)

Improvements and repairs made since purchase - 2007

replaced the engine alternator and exhaust/raw water mixing riser

replaced the main halyard sheave (after it jammed one day before our trip to PLI) - thanks to Brent at Blackline who fixed her so quickly, thereby saving the Griswold family vacation!
"I think you're all fucked in the head. We're ten hours from the fucking fun park and you want to bail out. Well I'll tell you something. This is no longer a vacation. It's a quest. It's a quest for fun. I'm gonna have fun and you're gonna have fun. We're all gonna have so much fucking fun we'll need plastic surgery to remove our godamn smiles. You'll be whistling 'Zip-A-Dee Doo-Dah' out of your assholes! Ahh. ha. ha. ha. I gotta be crazy! I'm on a pilgrimage to see a moose. Praise Marty Moose! Holy Shit!"...Clark Griswold, National Lampoon Vacation

installed an overside discharge system and pump for the holding tank

purchased a Walker Bay Genesis RHIB and 9.9HP Mercury outboard for shuttling Otis to shore

purchased a 40lb CQR anchor and 500ft of anchor rode

installed custom-made teak deck handrails made especially for us by our good friend Al, a carpentry instructor at Camosun College (the old ones were sanded to the point of falling apart and replacements could not be located due to the odd size of the handrail and the number of loops)

installed a new Harken Mark III foil and genoa furling system - to stop ridicule surrounding bare-headed sail changes because of current shitty foil and to save marriage while cruising in poor weather

installed a new rod forstay with the new furling and foil

installed a 12th clutch and a special genoa halyard for the furling system

replaced the too-thin main sheet with something more appropriately sized and glove-friendly - also to save marriage

replaced the dead radio/CD player deck

purchased a North NorDac main for cruising

purchased a North NorDac 135% genoa to use with the furling system

replaced the undersized mainsheet hardware with appropriate hardware - one Harken 1555 3" Midrange Triple Block w/Hexaratchet and Cam and two 1540 3" Midrange Blocks

Improvements and repairs made since purchase - 2006

installed proper backing plates on forward jib tracks - to prevent any deck stress

repaired forward starboard jib track and deck ripped out during the November storm - due the poor repair done on the delamination found when we first purchased the boat
(according to our insurance surveyor, the dude did a crappy job)

installed new life lines and repaired some of the oh-so-C&C stantions

installed new faucets and fresh water hoses in the galley and head

repaired Quantum Fusion racing main from the November storm and had material removed between the battens to form small 'scoops' - to reduce any fluttering which weakens the sail and causes damage to the delicate material (this is supposedly a standard feature in UK racing sails)

fought an ongoing battle against topside delamination

replaced bilge pump

replaced improper raw water system hoses

replaced old, worn-out cables running from the gear shifters to the transmission

installed proper backing plates on spinnaker gear attached to bow, and clutches and deck organizers

installed custom-fabricated stainless steel bow roller with closed chocks

faired keel - repaired a defect from a shoddy keel fairing done by the previous owner but it resulted in a much improved shape and awesome performance

installed new deck organizers and clutches - leading all the lines to the cockpit

purchased softer top batten (a small point but really reduces frustration in mailsail handling in light air)

purchased additional spin sheets to facilitate lazy sheet/guy jibes

 tuned rig

Improvements and repairs made since purchase - 2005

replaced the old tiller extension with a Forespar OceanRacer tiller extension

repaired topside delamination found during survey

installed a reef track on the boom
